Sorry for the delay getting this posted. I went on an impromptu vacation this past weekend. You’re thinking, “surely she took her laptop with her?” Yes, I did. Unfortunately, I stayed at the Sheraton in Syracuse, NY. I rented a suite for $200 a night and didn’t get a free high speed Internet connection with the deal. So, I balked at paying anything more for the room (which didn’t even include a microwave), and dispensed with doing work for a few days. Disconnecting myself from the Internet was like quitting drugs cold-turkey. I’m way too connected - but I can’t see changing that in the near future. I enjoy it too much.

So, please accept my apologies and forgive me for standing on principle when it came to paying for wifi at a hotel.

Rent a Cubicle? Freelancers Unite!

July 30, 2008 at 2:11 am | In Musings and Such | No Comments
Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

I hadn’t heard of this concept until recently - the idea of creating a workspace where freelance workers or contract workers can get together and rent cubicles in an open office space. Supposedly freelancers are lonely people. (Who knew?!) This loneliness can be combated by working with people in a similar situation - such as a unique workspace that provides such amenities as phone service, high speed Internet, fax service and the proverbial water cooler.

It sounds interesting, yet personally, I hate the thought of paying for a cubicle after I fought to get a job where I didn’t have to go to one every day anymore. I didn’t like my little gray cubicle, especially since I was never allowed to hang more than 1 personal item in it - company rules. The idea of cubicles is evil. Enough said.

So, what would be the upside to renting this type of office space? I guess if I were really lonely I would rent a space so I could be around other people, but then again, I could always get a group of people together on Meetup.com, agree to hang out at a local coffee shop and whip out our laptops there. It would be less expensive, and I wouldn’t feel like I had to dress up or keep my workspace neat everyday.

If anyone reading this has rented such a workspace, please share with us your thoughts and experiences. For now, I’m going to hang out in my living room happily typing on my laptop which rests on a folding table… and I’m going to watch t.v. while working. For me, that is a pretty good perk.

You don’t have to be a guy to apply for this cool job!

Outdoor Sports/Beer Blogger

A nationally recognized brand seeks professional bloggers to write about adventure sports, such as kayaking, surfing, and hiking.

This gig is paid as a flat fee - travel/expenses may be reimbursable.

The blog is about:
· pushing yourself to try new things without abandoning your roots
· appreciating the outdoors and living life a little on the edge
· tips and tricks, as well as training to live bigger

The blog is *not* about:
· machismo
· knowing it all
· hardcore “experts only” sporting
· the status quo

You should:
· live in California, Nevada, or Hawaii
· be able to travel regionally (approved travel is eligible for reimbursement)
· have a complete knowledge of adventure sports
· interact with readers on a regular basis (respond to comments, comment on similar blogs, etc)
· be able to use a hand-held video and still camera (you don’t need to be a pro, but you should be able to post some cool surfing vids on the blog)
· post at least once a week through March 2009.

Interested? To Apply:

· Send us an email (tfoutdoor@gmail.com) with information on yourself, including blogging experience
· include a link to some of your blogging work
· a brief (one paragraph or so) writing sample.

It seems that the most interesting jobs are for web developers, engineers and designers. The pay isn’t that bad either. I guess I should have studied harder in school when I was younger! If you’re looking for a job in this area, today is your day! There were lots of these types of jobs posted recently on the web.

Good Luck!

Good morning job seekers!

It always seems hard finding jobs in the middle of the month. I wonder if that is because people usually quit their jobs at the end of the month, thereby increasing the number of available jobs at the beginning of the next month? Just a musing. Nevertheless, I have found the following odds and ends for telecommuter job seekers this morning:

Happy Job Hunting!
